Candelieri

A year ago, I found myself back in my hometown of Sassari, which was a rare occasion for me during the hot summer months. On a warm morning, excitement and anticipation filled the air, echoing through the historic streets.

It was a moment that took me back over two decades, to a time when I last witnessed the captivating Candelieri Festival before leaving for the distant land where I now live. Armed with my camera and a heart full of memories, I returned to relish in the essence of this grand celebration, an event deeply ingrained in the city's spirit.

As a photographer, this journey wasn't just about capturing images; it was a voyage into my own past, a chance to relive cherished moments. Stepping into Sassari's vibrant heart, I was greeted by the rhythmic beats of drums, a pulse of tradition that enveloped me in a sense of belonging and shared heritage.

During the morning, I wandered around to witness the preparation of the towering candle-shaped structures, each symbolizing various guilds. With unwavering dedication and precision, the guild members adorned their "candeliere" with the new flag for the year on top, representing the protector saint and unique identity.

The Candelieri Festival, a time-honored tradition, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the town. From the evening, the structures parade through the streets with a vitality that defies time, dancing to the rhythm of the drummers.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm, golden hue on the candelieri, they make their way to the Santa Maria church, a procession that continues from sunset until night.

That day reminded me that traditions, like photographs, have the power to transcend time, allowing us to reconnect with our roots and create new cherished memories.
